Factors to consider when choosing a name
There are tons of things that go into choosing a name: the meaning, associations, ease of pronunciation, popularity, etc, etc. But what's the most important to you?
Here are my criteria, in order from most to least important:
-
Feels nice to say/hear, has 'flow' - I cannot deal with names that feel clunky when you say them
-
Has a good 'vibe' (aka. that mysterious 'it' factor) - some names you just like, some you don't, who knows why?
-
I don't know anyone with that name - yeah, I mean anyone, that includes people I don't like just as much as family members
-
Is visually appealing when written (or typed) - perhaps a little shallow, but you have to write your name a lot/see it written down, why not make it pretty?
-
Is not too common - having grown up with a phenomenally popular name (some of you may have seen my rant on this thread), I'm sort of against popular names now
-
Meaning - eh, I'm not really fussed with what names mean, sure if it's something particularly off-putting it'll, you know, put me off, but on the whole, I don't really mind what they mean
So, my fellow nerds of names, I have three questions for you:
-
What are your criteria?
-
Which factors are most important to you?
-
Why? (optional)
