DoWLN vs DoW: What am I loosing.

Hi. I played Dead of Winter quite recently, and went soon after to my board game vendor. He proposed me the DoWLN, claiming that this version is the same, with additional and optional rules. I bought it without hesitation, then I realised that this is not exactly what he said.

I red that they are less scenarios and less characters as the original, but I don't know how much. I also red that there is even mispelling rules, cards, etc.. They also removed the backstory for the scenarios.

So I'm asking you. How all this affect the game? The places are the same? Is it possible to print characters crossroads cards, and weapons from somewhere and add them? Does this stand alone add really more than before, even for people that are going to play lot of vanilla games to start? Do you think that this game is overall a better game than the original?
