What kind of piece would I need to remote control my lamp?

My light in my room is pretty trash and I want to set up a way that I could perhaps hook up my lamp that's plugged into an outlet so that I could use a remote (or my phone) to turn it on and off. Is there some sort of piece that could connect to my outlet that can block electricity flow through a remote? Or any other way I could do this?
