Jihad: offensive or defensive?

Is Jihad mandatory for Muslims? And is Jihad to be done offensively or only allowed in self defense? Are suicide bombings justified somehow by Islamic sources/scholars or any example from MO's time? I've read too much conflicting information and I'm very confused. Someone please help clear the air.
