In the context of the story, who would have written the Lay of Leithian?

I assume it would be the elves of Doriath who wrote this poem and passed it on, since many would have seen some events firsthand, and heard them from Luthien/Beren/Melian/Thingol personally. Anyone have any clarity on this question?
