Extreme webcam lag on Pi Zero W

I just got a Pi Zero W so I could setup a super cheap security camera so I can monitor my 3d printer while I'm away. I'm super new to this and the only way I could get it to work was to watch the webcam footage using Mplayer, and streaming that using VNC Viewer, and it works, just not very well. The webcam seems to be limited to about 1 fram e every 10-30 seconds, and is about 2-3 minutes behind real time. I know the Pi Zero is a very slow computer, but even that seems a bit much. Does that seem right to you guys?
