[Question] First time blowing a power tube

QUESTION

Hey guys,

First off, my amp is a Peavey Valveking 212 that I've had for about 3 years, it was 2nd hand when I got it but seems like it was in very good condition. For what it's worth the previous owner said he didn't play it a whole lot.

I was playing at a gig a last weekend and my amp stopped working during my performance. It really sucked but thankfully one of the bands I was playing with was really cool and brought an amp up for me to play through so we could finish our set.

So at the time I had no idea what was wrong, I'd never blown a tube before. Basically the amp was extremely hot and had no power to it, the 'on' light wouldn't even come on and the back of the amp smelled kind of like an electrical fire. It was very hot and humid inside the venue, worst on stage. Not sure if that was a contributing factor.

After bringing the amp home and looking at it more closely I could definitely tell one of the power tubes was blown - one of them was all cloudy in appearance while the rest looked normal.

So I'm going to go out and get some new power tubes. I'm thinking I will just replace all 4 tubes with a matched set, probably different brand but keep it 6L6's. Having never blown a tube before though I'm worried if there's something else wrong with it, I thought it was really odd that the amp light won't even come on when it's plugged in.

So is this normal? I'm hoping when I grab new tubes and put them in it'll be fine. Any input or experience from folks who have blown a tube would be appreciated. Thanks,
