[OR] Stolen car recovered by police, who towed it without contacting the owner. Tow company holding it ransom for $600.

Friend's car. He has a lot of stuff going on, on top of this, and I'm curious.

It was recovered yesterday. He was only notified by the police after it had been towed away. Is suing the thieves the only recourse?

It was found less than two miles from where it was taken (suburbs). Not dumped in backwoods miles away or anything like that.

Seems shady that a tow company is charging $600 for an in-town tow and not even 12 hours of storage. They charging a markup because it's a police tow?
