Whos motivated suicide achieved the most towards its aim?

Im watching hunger, and trying to work out if it has ever been truly successful despite its prevalence throughout history and its glamourisation in the media. To commit suicide for a cause seems tragically to represent a dead end that hopefully some examples can indicate these peoples faith was vindicated post mortem. Suicide rather than assassination.....
