Dolcezza
So, I will start this off by saying that I really like this place (gelato + coffee shop on 9th and H). It is very expensive, but both the gelato and the coffee are high quality and it's a nice little occasional splurge.
That said, I wanted to share a comical experience I had there last night. They have on their menu a single sundae called Coffee + Cookies. It costs $8 and has a list of hipstery sounding artisanal ingredients that help you feel a bit better about the cost.
Anyway, one of the ingredients is "Perrydell whip" - what I assume to be hand made whipped cream made with dairy sourced from a "local" farm called Perrydell. Well, my sundae wasn't lucky enough to be graced with this high end stuff. You can imagine my surprise when I saw the (very friendly and attentive) server grab a good old can of Reddi Whip out of the fridge and slather that stuff all over my sundae.
Please don't get me wrong, it was delicious. I just found it very funny, and was honestly hoping to find out that Reddi Whip is made in Perrydell, PA or something and that the chalk board menu was openly mocking me. I'm a fan of simple food, and the whole "artisanal" thing that's taken over urban restaurants all over the country is funny on its own, but this to me really stood out as a sign of the imminent "hipster fatigue" that I think will eventually set in on the food scene.
Anyone ever have a similar experience?
