My (28F) boyfriend (28M) of 6 months wants to move across the state to live with me, but I live with my mom (60sF)
First of all, this is my first post in this sub, and I would super appreciate any advice that can be given.
My boyfriend lives about 4 hours away from me and we've been discussing one of us moving to the other for a while now. Just recently, within the last week, the conversation has changed from me moving to him to him moving to me. This is a bit more of a challenge because I live with my mom. But, since it's come up, we've decided that the next time he comes to visit, he would be coming to stay. He would find a job, which won't be a problem for him at all, and we'd get a place together. We were planning for him to visit in a couple weeks, and that gave me enough time to talk to my mom and make sure everything is cool with her.
Yesterday, I was talking to him and he said he'd try to get here as soon as I got off work on Monday. I was a bit surprised since that's a hella lot sooner than what we'd talked about, and I asked him if he meant this coming Monday. He did. My mom is pretty damned chill, but here's where my worry comes in...
Several years ago, I had a boyfriend move in with me under similar circumstances. He'd get a job, we'd get our own place, and the peasants would rejoice. But... He got a job and then lost it. And never really looked for a new one. Until the relationship became too much of a strain on me and I exploded.
I NEED to talk to my mom about this as it's now about 25 hours away, but I'm nervous that she's going to not be okay with it because of the ghost of boyfriend past.
Also, I am a little bit frustrated with my boyfriend for sliding it up so fast without really talking about it. To be fair, he has good reason to get away from where he is. His job there doesn't actually pay him for his time worked and his roommate just moved in a girl who makes not only my boyfriend uncomfortable, but me as well. All of his family just recently moved out of the state, and he doesn't have a support system where he is. The stressors of being there are getting to be too much for him, and I genuinely just want him to be happy.
He's really amazing, he would cook and clean for both me and my mom to help out around the house, so he wouldn't just be a mooch. And I really, truly know that he could get a well paying job here within a couple of weeks.
So, my question boils down to two points. A. How do I talk about this with my mom? B. How do I tell him that he can't be surprising me with big stuff like this in the future?
TL;DR Boyfriend moved up moving date significantly and I don't know how to talk to him or my mom, who I live with, about it
