What was people's initial reactions to the Pentagon Papers in the United States when they began to appear in the press?

The Pentagon Papers are some of the best-known secret American documents that ever leaked to the press, followed very shortly by Chelsea Manning's CIA leaks and Edward Snowden's NSA leaks to Wikileaks and The Guardian/Intercept, respectively. What I would like to know is, how did normal people react at the time? Was it similar to how the Internet reacted to the NSA leaks (outrage, etc) or was it a slow burn that eventually built up culminating in the Congressional hearings and the Supreme Court decisions?
