An altcoin that is valuated against BTC; what if the chain splits, does the exchange automatically choose the chain with the most support?

Or what if the altcoin ends up on the chain with the less support? Theoretically maybe ending up on a 3rd chain? Sounds like end of the line for that altcoin then. Anyone knows who decides this?
