Let's discuss the future of VR
Let me preface this post by giving a little background on myself. I just got my oculus this Friday and have loved every minute of it. As many others have said, literally some of the best experiences in gaming I've ever had. The single player games are exhilarating, and the multiplayer games are a blast to interact with others. I've laughed more playing rec room with strangers than I have any other game with friends.
That said, not even a week ago I had no intention of buying an oculus despite the sale, it was really more of an impulse buy (best impulse buy ever). I always figured I'd get a vive, but planned on waiting because I didn't have enough room to use it. Then I saw how well the oculus could work even with limited space, so I took the plunge.
Now for the main point of this post: even though oculus/Facebook provided the majority of us with our entrance into VR, we need to be careful about buying everything on the oculus store. If we aren't careful, the HTC Vive could be put under leaving Facebook with no competition and the ability to charge whatever they want.
I don't know how real of a possibility this is, but it is definitely something worth consideration. The Vive is looking to do some pretty cool things with VR, and that could all be lost if they can't fund their product.
I don't know exactly how the businesses interact or work, but it definitely seems like steam is working with HTC and possibly giving them some kickback or portion of certain game sales (I couldn't find any information on this via google).
That said, what can we do? Well, assuming steam VR purchases do actually support the vive in some way; purchase games on steam if they don't have any oculus-specific features like presence-of-hand type stuff.
I can't say for sure that this supports the vive, but it certainly might give valve some incentive to. If nothing else, it keeps 3rd party developers from being forced to go with only one platform and yield to the demands of that company.
My ultimate point is that we need more than one company working on a VR solution, and it'd be a real shame to see the vive go under and all of their ideas along with it. Competition is good for us as consumers, and it forces the companies to constantly innovate.
I am by no means an expert on this topic, and I'd love to hear yalls feedback and thoughts on the subject! I've just been thinking about this recently and wanted to get a feel for what the community thinks as well. I am by no means trying to make it seem like Facebook is some evil company that is trying to dominate the market so they can inflate prices, but it is still something to think about.
Finally, I just want to give a shoutout to all the friendly and helpful people in this community that make it what it is! My past 3ish days of VR gaming have been glorious and I can't wait to see what lays ahead.
