22 years old, gamer and MA History student from the UK. Watched Star Wars for the first time...
I imagine the first question that may crop into peoples heads is "How the frick have you never seen Star Wars before?!?" Truth be told, I'm not a movie buff - I was always far more interested in games or reading. My parents knew nothing about sci-fi movies or movies in general so it was never introduced into my childhood. Anyways, since the new movies came out I decided to watch the first three movies and then Rogue One and Force Awakens (I haven't got to the prequels yet).
Admittedly, I was worried that the limitations of special effects in the 70's may be a turn-off but if anything, it enhanced my experience. I felt such a deep appreciation for the characters, the witty writing and the sheer scale of it all. I was blown away that not only was I interested in these characters, but I also warmed to them. The actors were seriously good and I just loved how comedy and sci-fi mixed so well - it was never predictable.
The new movies, I really enjoyed too - most notably Rogue One. The emotional depth the movie went to astounded me, so many 21st century sci-fi movies seem so banal and lacking in soul in comparison. Force Awakens was great, but because I also recently watched the first trilogy, felt a bit repetitive and a bit more obvious in its direction. It was still funny, great but somewhat underwhelming.
I'm now delving into as much star wars resources I can, wikia, archive footage, bonus features etc. I feel immersed in the universe and even though I never grew up with Star Wars - I feel it is now a part of me in some strange way, like something I never knew I needed.
I can understand why so many people are so devoted to this beloved franchise. It's truly awesome and I'm so glad I watched the movies.
May the force be with you.
