Master with Feln Fliers

The best part about the new set is that people are so busy having fun that they're forgetting to play Sandstorm Titan. I celebrated that fact by reaching master with the following:

Feln Fliers

3 Permafrost (Set1 #193)

4 Seek Power (Set1 #408)

4 Argenport Instigator (Set1 #268)

2 Rapid Shot (Set1 #259)

1 Whispering Wind (Set1 #202)

4 Wild Cloudsnake (Set1 #195)

4 Midnight Gale (Set1 #378)

3 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)

3 Feeding Time (Set1 #381)

4 Impending Doom (Set1 #286)

3 Memory Dredger (Set2 #159)

4 Champion of Cunning (Set1 #371)

3 Thunderstrike Dragon (Set1 #243)

11 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)

4 Cobalt Monument (Set1 #418)

10 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249)

4 Feln Banner (Set1 #417)

4 Seat of Cunning (Set0 #62)

Clockroaches, Lifeforce, Warp and Combrei control all try to play a bunch of non-Sandstorm Titan creatures, block with them, gain some life and win the late game. Well, that strategy doesn't work against a deck that curves out with one flying creature after the other: they can't block, their life gain doesn't do a lot when they take 10+ damage per turn and their lategame comes too late.

So how do you play this deck? Well, you play fliers and you attack with them. Against rush decks you of course block, but try to race all other decks. You will lose the late game, but you're quite good at winning races.`

Because we don't win the late game, we shouldn't be too greedy with Cobalt Monument. If you have to cast it as a power card, cast it as a power card.

I also employ the secret strategy of actually including enough power in my deck (33 + 4 Seek Power + 3 Wisdom of Elders).

Decent options that didn't make the cut are:

  • Cloudsnake Saddle isn't good at being the last fatty that kills them.

  • Swear Vengeance + Thunderstrike Dragon lets you pretend you're one of the cool Clockroach kids, but ultimately it's too slow. You're trying to murder the opponent, not out-greed them.

  • Surprisingly, Twilight Raptor is not good enough. You can only cast him on turn one if you draw it + one of your four Seat of Cunnings. That happens rarely and casting it somewhere after turn one isn't very impactful.

  • Maybe I should include Umbren Reaper, but the 3x shadow requirement can actually be tough. When you won't win the late game, you have to be consistent in the mid- and early game. Plus you have 8 five-drops already if you count Cobalt Monument.

  • Black-Sky Harbinger is an option in a different metagame, but right now I like Thunderstrike Dragon better.

Finally, if you're limited in shiftstone, I actually wouldn't recommend investing in this deck. Feln fliers isn't that inherently powerful: nobody played Feln Fliers before set 2 came out and yet 72 of 75 cards come from set one. Feln fliers does exploit a weakness in the current metagame very well, but who knows what the metagame will look like a week from now.

Still, this deck does let you take revenge on Clockroach players.
