A Setting I'm Working On
This is my first complete AutoREALM map. It's for a setting I'm working on called Aerdaris.
The basic premise is the gods are on an eternal quest to create perfect mortal life, life free from all evils of the mortal condition. Aerdaris (as it is called in the most prevalent language of the realm, Peninsular) is just one of these many attempts, and a failed one at that. The gods sent powerful beings called "Messengers" down to try and guide the mortals. When the gods realized this reality was a lost cause, they abandoned it, leaving the mortals and the Messengers behind. With no higher power to serve, the Messengers basically did fuck all for a few thousand years while the various mortal civilizations developed (and tried in vain to get the gods to return). Over time the Messengers went mad, and as they interacted with mortals less and basically became extremely powerful hermits, they lost control of their excess magic. This runaway magic now affects most of the land, especially the coasts, mutating animals and causing disasters, so civilization is limited to only small parts of the world. The setting is not low magic per se, but low controlled magic. There's plenty of magical fuckery going on but very little of it is controlled by sentient beings. The only way to gain magical powers is by making a pact with a Messenger, which, considering most of them are mad, would be a difficult task.
TL;DR Gods are too disappointing in mortals to stay around and they leave a bunch of demigods who go mad and unknowingly fuck the world up.
I'd love any feedback on the idea and the map (I know it's not that good, cartography isn't my specialty) as well as questions that go deeper into the lore. Some of it I already have pinned down but a lot of questions would expand on the lore as I have to fill sections in to answer.
