Not happy with current job. Should I accept the lower pay offer, or grind it out where I am?
I'm 22, in Ontario. I work pt and go to school ft during Sept- May. Currently working in large popular department store for the last 2.5yrs in various departments.
I used to work cash (which was easy and I liked, but I didn't care for trying to get apps). It eventually gave me anxiety, so I was moved to pharmacy. Loved it, was learning a lot b/c it aligned with my studies and was intending to stay until I started a career. Was moved to cosmetics b/c they couldn't pay me. Cosmetics is fine. It's easy, mostly boring. I don't wear makeup so I have to watch vlogs to see the latest trends to help customers. No training involved. When it's busy it's great; when it's slow manager wants to me dust shelves for 8hrs. Not allowed to help next dept even when there are multiple people working in cosmetics. Don't feel personally or professionally fulfilled. Feel like a profit robot slave for the company.
As of end of July, I'm being moved back to cash. I don't have a say and when I tried to explain the reason I left in the first place the manager's exact words were, "I don't care. You should feel grateful we even found you a spot. You don't have a choice where you go. Either take it or leave".
I've been job hunting and was recently offered a job at a gourmet food store and catering company. It's a retail position where I would package food, make food displays, ring ppl out, take orders for the kitchen. Never done it before, but it's a very small company (I would be working with 3 others up front).
Current job: $12.05/hr (started at $11.55), minimum 12hrs, usually work on average 25hrs/wk, 10% store discount and sometimes we get a few extra discounts every 6mos, stock options, profit sharing as a bonus (I usually get just under ~$500/), a ton more people working in dept so easier to switch shifts and availability, and call in sick if need be, extra shifts always available. Store hours are 7am-11pm so shifts can start at 6:30am and end at 11:30pm. Commute is a 15min walk.
Offer: $11.40/hr, no minimum hrs listed but manager said usual is 20hrs/wk and more in the fall, 2 weeks paid vacation every year, 30% discount on all food. Store hours are 9-7 during the week and 9-5 during the weekend so I would have 4-5hrs shifts in week, 8hrs on weekend presumably, only 4 people (incl me) working up front including 2 managers so it will be harder to take time off or call in sick if needed. Commute is just under an hour by bus.
My mom thinks it’s stupid and pathetic for me to go for a job that’s lower wage. I should be trying to make more for myself. I should grind it out at my current job for my hopefully last year of school (She is under the assumption I’ll be moving back home which I’m not). I don't know what I plan to do as a career but I'm contemplating going to college for something after. I’m not happy where I am, and need a change. What would you do?
