The chemical interest, and her death.

Story

I'm new to the rim, and I've been playing on a certain colony for a while now, with Phoebe, just to get the hang of the game. Here's a little story about my chemical interest colonist, and how she met her end.

At some point, I recruited a prisoner, Flossie was her name, and assigned her to hauling, essentially. That was about the time that I decided to get into alcohol brewing, in order to try out the drugs system. I didn't really know what a chemical interest did, and hardly noticed that Flossie was one.

My colonists' moods were very high for quite a bit, having a beer every day or so when they were feeling low. This was very rewarding for a quadrum or two, with moods in the 90s for days and days, but suddenly my most valued constructor developed cirrhosis due to alcohol. I had neither the silver nor the parts to replace his damaged liver, so in order to minimise the risk I decided to sell all my beer as soon as I could, and reduce the consumption rate to protect other colonists' health.

But the chemical interest Flossie was having none of my plan. She very unexpectedly went on an alcohol binge, and immediately became addicted. I could deal with that; cold-turkey was my plan and good mood was plentiful in my colony, thanks to my 20-skill artist. To supplement joy just a little, I harvested some nearby ambrosia and set the consumption rate to once every five days.

I had sold all of my beer for a good profit, and even bought some prosthetic parts for my injured colonists. Mood was very high, and wealth was steadily increasing, when Flossie went on another binge, this time on ambrosia. I watched her quickly develop a tolerance, and immediately began burning the ambrosia - I couldn't let this happen again. However, I was too slow; Flossie was addicted again, this time to ambrosia.

This was more than I could handle - I should have made a hat of her when I had the chance. I ordered my surgeon to harvest Flossie's liver, so that my constructor's liver could be replaced. The surgeon did the deed, and quickly buried Flossie's corpse in a pre-prepared sarcophagus out in the snow, and then cleanly transferred the fresh liver to my colonist - he's a fantastic surgeon.

Anticipating the mood drop, I checked my colonists' moods. Unfortunately, Flossie was very popular; seemingly friends with everyone, and so a reasonable mood debuff was inevitable. I then tabbed to my surgeon:

My Fiancée Flossie died. -18

It took a moment to realise that I had forced my surgeon to kill his own fiancée. I recalled that he had buried her corpse himself, and so I decided to check the sarcophagus' art - he was even visiting the grave, out in the cold, at the time:

The sarcophagus bears a portrayal of Flossie Burban being killed in a cowardly, halfhearted way. [...] This representation refers to the killing of Flossie on 3rd Decembary, 5504. [...]

Rimworld has never hit harder before. This game is incredible. Also, my first shot at a story! Hope you enjoyed.
