Pre out vs line out?

I know this has been asked before, however I know what the difference is for the most part apart from one thing, does it matter if you output from a pre out to another headphone amp?

What's the disadvantages of doing this compared to a line out?

Other than being neurotic about getting it set right... Obviously.
