Working for Hospital Systems

I'm looking at applying to a few large hospital systems in New York; specifically in the ETL / Business Intelligence / SQL space.

Do any of you have experience in software development at these types of employers? I'm curious how it would be different from working for large financial services companies (my background).

1. Do they typically pay less?

2. Did you find job satisfaction from at least indirectly helping a hospital system?

3. How are developers treated? Cost-center or value-add?
