What books will teach me to properly appreciate literature?

I believe studying art enhances one's virtues, especially towards empathy. Literature seems to be my calling. Unfortunately, I'm not good at it. I'd like to read substantive materials towards building a framework of analysis as I read.

I do have "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" and "How to Read Novels Like a Professor", and even one of the uncorrected proofs of one of those (I forget which). I didn't buy them because they were good, I bought them because I happened to find them at the thrift store. Frequently stumbling on books in local second hand isn't a good sign. Still, feel free to tell me about the books if you happen to know about them.

To reiterate, I just want book recommendations on the topic.
