Is your employer legally required to give you a copy of your contract?

Me and my girlfriend both recently started our first full time jobs. My company provided me two copies of my contract, one to sign and return to them and one for myself. Hers only had her sign the one to be returned and have not (yet, maybe they will, she's only been there a week) given her a copy for herself. This strikes me as extremely off and I've told her to ask them for a copy so she's got it for reference. I don't think her company are doing anything intentionally dodgy, based on what she's told me of the general work culture there I think whoever's job it was probably just forgot.
