Throwaway ~~ My father 'the woman'
I was a young teenager when my father told us he was 'really a woman'. My younger sister had not yet gone through puberty. My parents were already divorced, and the friction between them was already very intense, mostly due to the selfish financial attempts of my father to force my mother to sell our house - the source of her livelihood. I had already 'taken her side'. He told us in a public place, presumably so we would be milder in our reactions. My sister, who could not possibly understand what was being said, was (at the time) unperturbed, I was not, and ran away crying. He was apparently surprised, he had 'raised us to be tolerant.' There was zero support anywhere - except propaganda which encouraged me to embrace my father's delusions. I asked him to choose between seeing me, his son, or continuing down this path. He chose the latter, no doubt thinking this was an idle threat. It was not, and I have not seen him for over half a decade. Meanwhile he has 'transitioned' and is now living as a woman. All while my sister was going actually 'becoming a woman'. to say this has done damage to her mental health is putting it mildly. She certainly felt more pressure from her female friends, than I felt from my male friends to be accepting of this. But she isn't. She just pretends to be so that he won't carry out his threats to do himself harm. I feel guilty as hell that I wasn't there, and that she had to carry this all herself. But there was no support. Friends of my mother's stopped talking to her because of her 'bigoted' attitude towards transgendered people. Personally, I never tell anyone. I am afraid of people saying that I am a bigot. I am not a bigot. I am left wing. I am a trade unionist. And I am, to the best of my capabilities, a feminist. It was three months into my current relationship that I told my girlfriend. Fortunately, she was very understanding, and had long secretly harboured gender critical ideas herself (again - how ridiculous that a woman and a feminist feels unable to say that the feminist movement can and should focus on 'women born women'?).
The point of my post is not to elicitate pity - but to point out that society is tripping over itself to defend this garbage. There is no support for the children of trans people. None whatsoever. Fall in line or face the consequences - social ostracisation - whether because you are a bigot, or the child of a freak. I have never felt a greater wave of understanding than reading and discovering this subreddit. I have seen my female family members abused, robbed of their labour, passed over, abandon their own careers. My father has faced none of this - and never will.
