What exactly would happen if I just refused to pay my school debt?

I owe somewhere around 40k in student debt. If I just refuse to pay it, I assume I will end up in jail eventually or something, but is that what would actually happen?

Just curious. Would've posted this in some financial group but this is definitely the better sub.
