[5e] I feel my character is weak

Good evening everyone.

I've been playing D&D with a few friends, we've been playing other RPGs for a long time, but we've been playing D&D only for 4 sessions.

I've rolled up a Tiefling Sorcerer (Wild Magic) character, and it has been a ton of fun to roleplay as, but I've come to feel like my character is somehow... underpowered? At least at damage outputting.

I've always heard mages are powerful damage dealers in D&D, but I always seem to deal less damage than melee attackers, even with my non-cantrip spells.

We've started at level 1 and last quest I just got enough experience to reach level 3. I'm not sure if my current line up of spells is relevant, but I'm running:

Cantrips

• Dancing lights
• Fire Bolt
• Mage Hand
• Shocking Grasp

Level 1

• Magic Missile
• Detect Magic
• Witch Bolt

Is there something I'm doing wrong as I play the Wild Magic sorcerer (And yes, I have been using tides of chaos between long rests).
