Two questions about applying for US Passports that I haven't been able to find through searching google. Hopefully one of y'all knows the answers.

1. The application asks for the applicants mother's name at birth, birthdate, and place of birth. I don't speak to my mom and haven't for close to 18 years, I do know she was adopted so I'm unsure if the last name I know for her is accurate for last name at birth and I don't know where she was born. Do I write "unknown"? Will this cause complications in the application process?

2. My husband has a government passport, obviously he can't use that unless it's for work. When applying for a personal passport does this count as his first time applying? Or would it be considered some kind of renewal?

I know these questions are kind of odd, but I'm not really sure where else to ask. Any input y'all have is greatly appreciated!
