Bulldog Canyon Camping + Tubing?

A year or two ago, I drove up to Mesa from Tucson to meet with a large group having a bonfire party. Cops kinda preemptively shut it down, so instead, I was invited along with this guy and his girlfriend to go offroading. By the magic of Google maps, I've determined they probably took me to Bulldog Canyon. I remember them hoping someone had left a gate open, and I noted today you need a code to access the gate, so I'm sure that's the spot.

Anywho, I'm down in Tucson. I have a stock Cherokee XJ and enjoy casual recreational 4x4 driving. I also love tubing. I was up there yesterday tubing the Salt alone, and thought how nice it would have been to get out of the river and not have to drive all the way back to Tucson for almost 2 hours. I'd like to tube down river and camp out somewhere in my hammock.

Can you camp in the Bulldog Canyon area? I just emailed for a permit so I'm totally going to check it out next time I'm up there (heck, probably next weekend or the one after). Monsoon season is kind of putting a damper on plans. Yup, I got caught up in that haboob yesterday on the way home...if you can camp there, what's the wildlife situation like? Would it be dangerous for a lone camper? Are the folks out there outdoor enthusiasts or unhinged hillbillies? I don't really know anyone in Tucson or Phoneix to camp/tube with, so I'm gonna be doing this alone and would like to know if it's a bad place to sleep overnight.

Edit: If anyone finds this post in a search for the future, I can say that attaining the pass was really easy. I emailed the requisite information (name, address, DL number. Basic stuff) Sunday morning and got an email Monday afternoon with the permit. All you have to do is print the permit, sign it, and have it in your vehicle while in the area. The permit includes a passcode for the entrance gate. The email includes all rules and regulations for use, including a map. It is free and good for one year, so there's no good reason not to send off for it!
