[Arcade][Mid to Late 80s, early 90s] Top-down shooter game where you played as a mage

This question is for my dad. He used to play this game at the arcade and from his recollection, it's a 2D arcade shooter game where you played as a mage and you traveled across various levels, killed various creatures and got lots of fun power-ups. My dad said the weapons were sometimes simple fireballs and some where flashy "boomerang-like" weapons that left lots of trails as it flew across the screen. Some levels had lots of greenery and shrubs and some weapons fired across those.

That's all he remembers. It was one of his fav games at the arcade before he moved and then never played games again. Now that I've built a cabinet for MAME emulation, I'd like to find this game so my dad can play it.
