My client just passed away

I'm one month into my job as a housing specialist. I help house homeless people.

I housed my very first client two weeks ago. He was so stunned to be in his new place. He was talking about decorating it with music albums and having his kids come over.

We had to do a wellness check today. I didn't go. They found him passed away. It looked like an overdose.

I'm so fucking sad. He lived there for 2 weeks. He seemed so happy. He was my very first housed client. I'm heartbroken.

This work is very very very difficult for me and I very much want to continue working in homelessness advocacy and other related such fields. But this is very hard on me and it's surreal that the rest of the office is able to move on so quickly. My head hurts from holding back tears. I'm so sad.

RIP J, you will be missed. Thank you for being my first client.
