Did Chester seem different this album cycle?

In hindsight, in light of what happened, Chester seemed a bit different this album cycle to me. He didn't look as healthy as he used too, always wore sunglasses. He tried so hard to promote this latest album it almost seemed forced IMO. Everything seemed a bit off this time around? Or maybe I'm just trying to justify what happened, I don't know.
