Trying to make a Recipe for Preconstructed-Power Level Commander Decks
Hello everyone!
Just a quick disclaimer: This is my first time on reddit so I apologize for any formatting mistakes. Did search for similar threads before making this post, but didn't find anything.
Background: We have a monthly playgroup of 10 close friends and we always play the preconstructed Commander decks that released between 2013-2016. It's great fun since these decks are well-balanced against each other and it still feels fresh and new, because decks and commanders are picked randomly via image-shuffle app (there are always 3 possible commanders per deck - so 65 by now). We sometimes also spice it up with the planes from the Planechase Anthology!
We recently had a new guy in our group who wanted to bring his own decks. These decks all had a power level ranging between 95% and 100% and were often used for regional commander tournaments, so it kinda felt like archenemy with him at the table...
So my lads and I have often given building own decks a thought but we didn't want to end up in an arms race. We enjoy the pace of the preconstructed decks and still want them to be viable when playing against self-made ones. So I'm trying to come up with some rules / restrictions and wanted to gently ask for some advice, or even better, experience here. :) I already have some ideas and i would love to add your suggestions!
Recipe for Brewing a Preconstructed-Level Commander Deck
- Price-Range: 50$ - 170$ (Always considering the cheapest version of the card)
- Up to 3 Legendary Creatures with Commander Identity
- Would be great if all possible Commanders are equally viable in the deck. Preconstructed Decks often tend to have multiple win conditions evolving around given three legendary creatures. Furtherly you won't run into focussing too aggresively on one win condition like most 100%-Power Level decks do. Besides that it's nice to switch the commander sometimes to get another perspective on your deck.
- Avoid heavy tutoring
- Sol Ring allowed
- 1-2 rare lands
- Some conventional mana-artifacts
- Maximum of 45 Rares, for each Mythic -2,5 Rares (rounding off; Example: 7 Mythics -> 27 Rares allowed)
- Avoid infinite combs or overpowered singles that make everyone at the table hate you (Looking at you [[Iona, Shield of Emeria]])
- Add some flavor and / or tribal according to own taste
- No reserved list cards
- Go for an overall Power Level between 50-65%, you can check the preconstructed Deck Lists for downgrade-inspiration
Based on these rules I came up with two decks you can check out here (Suggestions to balance it even more greatly appreciated!):
-
Zombie Mill: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/dimir-multiplayer-mill-deck/
-
Goblin Tribal: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/edh-goblin-deck/
So I am curious. What would you put on the rules list?
Have a nice day,
Perserk
