Electric Teams: Have you designed your own inverter and motor controller?

I'm putting together a plan for making an inverter and motor controller for either 2018 or 2019 depending on how well the project goes and I'd be interested to hear any experience others have had doing so.

What spec were you targeting? What were your biggest problems? Did you have help or anyone with experience (eg from placements) helping you? Any other thoughts?

I've just finished a placement working with a company that produces high performance electric drive trains for motorsport. I'm hoping what I've learned on my internship will be a good starting point but I am aware of the monumental task ahead of getting something that works reliably.
