ubuntu software update vs manual update

ubuntu 17.04

click top left icon to search computer

type "ubuntu software" then click icon

the "Updates" tab has a "1" in it

click updates tab,

see "OS Updates includes performance, stability, & security improvements"

if I'm doing manual updates with:

sudo apt- get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

why should i update through the ubuntu software?

(after doing a manual update as described above, i still have the "1" in the updates tab, which notifies me i have an update pending)
