Telltale games are they shit and am I the only person that was disappointed by the recent bundle? Or do critics overpraise games with words in? Or should they hire real writers?

I'll just put this out there, it's a rant admittedly but hopefully it fits in with PGs, it wil be interesting to see the upvote downvote ratio anyway.

They aren't games, at all, I'll set my stall out at the start, they put me in mind of Dragon's Lair which was hugely criticized at the time for being all flash graphics (for the time) and no game, surely we're way past that now? They're not games they are something you read or watch, which is fair enough but they don't work, they are badly written, I've tried with these, I really have but I'd much rather read or watch something written by competent writers and not have to "click" to forward the story.

I used to and still have a decent sized collection of Fighting Fantasy books and adore them, ok maybe not the best writers in the world but they were writers, they could write, they had to write, that's all they had. Compare that to the Teltale games or The Last of Us. I really think that the video games industry needs to start hiring "real" writers. Or that the video games criticism industry needs to hire more people that have read a decent amount of good books.

Most of the games that have been praised for the high quality of the writing in recent years are only good if you compare them to other video games, not to books or tv or movies. If you're going to try to be a book or tv or movie (hello Telltale) then you should at least be as good and pay decent writers, not get the guy the does your coding (or his mate) to toss off a story or a few lines. It's not hard to hire decent writers there are bundles dying for the chance to write something, anything, video games could become the new pulp magazines, pay shit money but get your name out there, it's another avenue writers need but I see too many games obviously written by someone that has never written prose in their life.

Pillars of Eternity (*disclaimer, I think it's an excellent game, except for the writing) to pick a recent example has to be one of the most badly written games I've ever played, hire some fucking writers, you're there to make the game, storyboard it, then give it to someone that can actually write the thing.

Edit: I should add that if anyone can point me towards an honest to goodness well written game (except Planescape Torment) or even a writer of games I should look out for (that would be the big one) I'd appreciate it.

Edit 2: I'd just like to thank people for their intelligent replies, I know it's not exactly on-topic for here but one of the main reasons I posted in this subreddit is because I knew I mostly wouldn't get the "omg ur shit" response I would have got in certain other places, I'm still trying to work this out in my own head and most peoples feedback, even if they don't agree with me has been really helpful and well argued.

Edit 3: To give some context, a list of narrative heavy games I think are well written, please give me some more to try, I would appreciate it:

  • Planescape Torment

  • Fallen London/Sunless Sea

  • Her Story

  • 80 Days

Some to try
