Looking for cheap delicious food recommendations in the Boston area's outer neighborhoods
I'm always on the look out for interesting little places to get a good meal out in the neighborhoods. I thought I'd ask where people like to eat well while still being relatively budget conscious. Bonus points for non American fare. I know what a hamburger tastes like. I want to try new things!
To start I'll list some of my favorite out of the way places in my neighborhood of Dorchester.
Singh's Roti is amazing. They make Trinidadian food. It's mostly take out. They serve huge portions, with seriously intense hot sauce, and make sweet, sweet home made sorrel wine. I like to pick up a couple of Doubles (curry channa- indian like chickpea dish in a burrito like wrapper) or a Roti and bring them over to the excellent Dorchester brewery around the corner. 692 Columbia Rd at Everett Sq
Garifuna Cafe offers Honduran cuisine. The Garifuna are generally of African ancestry and settled along the coast in several Central American countries. There's a lot of beans and rice and tortillas to their food ways but there is a heavy Caribbean influence too. Lot's of fried fish and stewed meats and fried plantains. My favorite thing there is the baleada, a large fried tortilla folded in half filled with refried beans and eggs and meat. It's super filling and outrageously good. The folks that own the place are as sweet as pie and it's right near the Four Corners train stop. 143 Washington St Dorchester.
Banh Mi Ba Le. Banh Mi sandwiches- you know what they are. Ba Le may in fact be the best in Boston and at $4 a pop they may be the biggest bargain too. Expect fresh baked rolls, a confusing ordering system and a bubble tea station. I love it. 1052 Dorchester Ave Dorchester in Savin Hill.
Lucky Cafe is a no frills Chinese place that specializes in barbecue. It's just like the shops in Chinatown. There's a big glass case in the window with a variety of delicious meats to choose from. They generally have char siu, crispy pork (my personal favorite), duck, chicken, and occasionally cuttlefish. You order at the counter and someone goes to work with a cleaver in the traditional manner. Your protein of choice is served on rice with steamed bok choy in a matter of seconds. They have standard Chinese-American dishes available too. The truth is I've never ordered any of them. Stick with what's in the glass display case and you can't go wrong. 1107 Dorchester Ave Dorchester, near Savin Hill.
