Did people in Kyushu think of Mt. Fuji as sacred?
Reading "The Making of Modern Japan", I read that during the Tokugawa Shogunate, regional Shinto practices like the worship of Mt. Fuji blossomed. I'd previously thought of Mt. Fuji as being a generally Japanese symbol; was it actually just a Kantō practice that people confused for a national one? How much would a guy in 1800 (or modern) Nagasaki care about Mt. Fuji?
