How and why does SM have the reputation to be a primarily "Visuals" company?

Also YG's "talent" reputation and JYP's "personality" reputation. Is it a result of media play? Maybe YG's an JYP's are but SM's reputation of simply being a company of visuals is quite negative for their artists which are actually very talented.
