[Discussion] Walking 2 very different dogs

Misc

My girlfriend and I have a Jug (Jack Russell / Pug) (age 7) and we're currently in talks about adopting a Shar Pei (age 2), both male. We're trying to work out if this dog is a good fit for our little gang and if we could be good owners for him.

Yesterday we got to take them both for a walk together to see how they get on, and immediately it became apparent that they have very different levels of energy and strength.

Our Jug is quite slow and likes to stop to sniff everything, often digging his heels in hard when he wants to go a different direction. But the Shar Pei was pulling forwards on his lead, desperate to keep going forwards and having to be held back constantly.

Does anyone have experience with walking dogs who are very different with their walking behaviours? Do dogs in a group tend to 'equalise' their speeds over time? Is it, perhaps, just an age thing?

Because of our work schedules, we'd have to take turns to walk both dogs (i.e. I'd walk both of them in the morning and my girlfriend would walk both of them in the evening). So I'm a little concerned that having control of both dogs would be a challenge for 1 person at a time.

Any advice /tips would be appreciated. Thanks! :)
