One of My Favorite Things About the World/History of ASOIAF

Spoilers Default

Whats the famous quote about history? Something like "Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it." And in real life one can point out times, minor and obscure to higher degrees in which history repeats itself. And this superstition/proverb about history repeating itself is a well known one.

In ASOIAF, these thoughts still hold true, just as the real world in which parallels across history whether they be strong or loose can be drawn.

The history of the world is rich, and many direct parallels from the past can be connected to the main series, details which I love, and it seems that Westeros truly hasn't learned from their history.

Here are a few examples;

Aegon IV/Robert Baratheon; Much of their personalities are different from eachother, but a core characteristic of lust and "whoring" holds true. To go further, stronger links with Aemon and Naerys/Jaime and Cersei can be drawn as well. Both Jaime and Aemon are members of the Kingsguard, their sister married to the lusty King. Rumors of the brother and sister being lovers is true for both as well, as well as the King's heir being a suspected bastard.

Maekar/Stannis: These two are more so linked by their personalities. Never expected to inherit, forced by duty to become King. Always believing themselves to be in the shadow of their older brother, cold and honorable.

Dance of Dragons/Dorne: This is more of a loose connection. Older daughter supposed to be the true heir, but strife with younger brother as they seem to be groomed more for inheritance despite prior promises, causing tension between the two.

Aegon VI/Daeron I: Both young Targaryens (well, alleged in the former) in front of a group of their supporters (the Golden Company captains/the small council) declare a similar confident statement about themselves to inspire their party to do a certain course of action. Aegon's "I am the only dragon you need", and Daeron's "You already have a dragon, he stands before you."

Robb Stark/Daeron I: Both young military prodigies, warring in foreign territories. Their nicknames are another strong link, "Young Wolf", "Young Dragon". Despite their military success, they die young in a non military setting under betrayal in a normally peaceful environment.

Well, those are the parallels I can think of off the top of my head. What do you think? Have any parallels of your own, I'm sure theres a bunch more!
