This happened to me in Dec of 2012!

I lived with my Ex boyfriend at the time and it was the week before my 30th birthday. Dec 14th 2012. For the entire week beforehand our semi-crazy roommate Dan was obsessed with this song! He played it for a whole week on repeat in his room at full blast even when he left, and he locked his door so we couldn't even try to turn it off. To me, the song "somebody that I used to know" sounded like an old Phil Collins song. Even coming through the walls, it had more instruments and sounded more 80's pop alternative and definitely had a guitar and drums. I am 100% sure on the date, as I had an epiphany on my birthday and decided to move out. It WAS my 30th, the big 3-0. And I'm 35 now. (2017) I was working in a local bar at the time and was up to date on the local popular music at the time because of our jukebox and the fact that we had drum and bass/jungle/ rave like music every Thurs Fri and sat night, the nights I was lead bartender. We even had karaoke. And in the beginning of 2013 it became very popular. I even learned how to play it on my accordion and did many searches for the song on YouTube but could only find the light instrumental version by gotye or acoustic covers. Even the DJs at our club couldn't find the version I heard through the wall night and day. My boyfriend just showed me a spoof posted in Jan 27 2012 of a guy singing "the star wars that I used to know!" Making fun of gotyes video. Also on the day the Mayans prophesized the world was going to end, (in this week of constant repetitiveness through the wall) and I remember sitting in the living room with my ex Charlz and joking with him that we were gonna die listening to that stupid song! Over a year later, I was riding with my friend Rich and it came on over the radio and I mentioned to him I hated that song because it reminded me of Charlz and how I still disliked him at the time. Rich informed me that the song just came out. And I told him no back then! I've even told that story to my current boyfriend and he remembers listening to it in Israel in late 2011! Sorry if this doesn't end up as a comment on a current post but this is my first reddit post and I can't figure out how to comment..
