A good place to live for a software dev?
Hey mates,
Originally posted that in r/fican/, but figured I'd have more responses here, so...
I'm moving to Canada in about half a year.
I'm a Senior Software Engineer (Ruby and Rails), fluent English speaker, white european male if that ever matters. What are some places I can look into for finding job and settling down in suburbs?
Criteria can be:
- Good enough pool of jobs so that I won't struggle to find one once I land (I am really good at what I do, around 8 years of experience, worked with multiple production 2-4k requests/minute projects in english-speaking environments, so basically I can show and prove my skills quite well). I have around 6-10 months of expenses saved up in advance for Canada.
- If the place will resonate with me, I'd prefer to eventually buy a house somewhere in suburbs, so house prices should probably be not Toronto-style :)
- Salary-to-cost of living ratio, both for my house goal and eventual FI (I have a financial independence/early retirement goal in mind), I'm really interested in this one to be quite high (e.g. Toronto does not seem to fit in due to living costs and house prices).
- I am not speaking French as of yet, I am keen to learn if that helps me achieve my goals, I think that's a dope and fun language to know anyways
I am totally fine with all kinds of weather, actually I love snow and cold, so the weather is not really a factor for me.
Dear Canadians, what should I do?
Thanks heaps, I owe you guys some beers.
Edit: I am coming alone, no spouse, kids, grandpas, cats, dogs or parrots
