You're better than your parents
This post is for those who are struggling with the verbal tirades from their APs.
Hello my fellow Asians! I notice a lot of posts recently where people are ranting about their parents making them feel insignificant about grades, majors, goals, and even themselves. I'm here to tell you: fuck them. They don't know shit. Asian parents come in different forms. And some APs care, while some just want to use their kids. Regardless of what kind of APs you have, they will talk down on you.
For me, I had many people commend me on my grades, majors, goals, etc. Many of whom were college professors, high school teachers, friends, colleagues, and other family members. They motivate you to keep being who you are, but when your parents say you're not shit, you start to question everything. Why? BECAUSE THEY'RE OUR FUCKING PARENTS! From an early age, we believed that they knew it all, but as we grew older and start to develop our own identity, we are held back by our parents. Why? Because we didn't meet their AP standards. We didn't have the grades they wanted, we didn't choose the major they wanted, they don't like your friends. A plethora of reasons.
Fellow Asians. What a shitty predicament we are in. We want to believe that our parents want the best for us. We want to believe that they're doing everything they are out of love. But that's still a huge MAYBE. Why? We don't know our parents' intentions because communication in Asian families is almost nonexistent. So how do we handle them?
Simple. We don't. Some of you have parents who use you. Some of you have toxic parents who verbally attack you until it can feel like they sucked your souls out. The only valid reason I can think of is finances. However, if you can cut them out and live independently, do it. I am a firm believer that one learns from his/her journey through life rather than verbally-abusing "lectures."
I'm considering enlisting in the army to be my own man. I want to develop stronger self-discipline, and be my own man. I'll admit, I need my parents and their support. I was raised to depend on them. This might be my escape to freedom, but nothing's final.
Stay strong out there my brothers and sisters!
