What are things to do at sea?

My players are dead set on getting a ship and becoming pirates/mercenaries and having all sorts of seaborne adventures on a fast ship they found. What things have you guy found fun/engaging to do at sea? How should I handle their travel? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks! (Setting is pretty vanilla, some steampunk tinkery things but they aren't widespread yet)
