Having trouble getting stuck into Eureka 7

Let me start off by saying I love the opening and ending. I'm 6 episodes in and can't sympathize with any of the characters.

For example why did am I supposed to root for Renton and his crew? The military hasn't done anything really bad so far. In Code Geass , the army killed babies and Japenese people.

In Eureka 7 I haven't seen them really do anything bad. Yet Renton just to cheer up some kids, goes to a military base and graffitis the place up.

And then when Eureka goes to save them , she cuts some FLO's in half. And blood spurts from out of them. Is that blood or oil which comes out of the FLO's when they are cut in half?

Because seems pretty shitty, that a soilder is killed for trying to apprehend some outlaws who messed up their property.

People talk about this great romance, but so far it's been pretty cringey. Renton is acting like some poorly written teenager, while Eureka is supposed to be some saviour figure. Anyway, the pairing dosen't feel authentic, it feels like another anime fantasy pairing for young men.

But I just wanted to ask how can I sympathise with these characters, and does this stuff get better.

I'm also finding these descriptions of magical skateboarding a bit tiring. But let me stress I LOVE THE OPENING!! But that's about all I love about the show at the moment.
