Best Phaser for recording?

I just got a box that can run into pro tools last week. I honestly don't like any of the plug ins I have for pro tools, so I've just been using my board for FX. Everything works great except my MXR EVH phaser. Whenever I try to get a good sound with an overdrive, the sweep makes my signal clip, and my guitar track sound like garbage. Would the normal phase 90 work better? What about a small stone?
