My [28F] ex(?) boyfriend [30M] is moving cross country. He's scared of long distance, but I want to try

Relationships

Using a throwaway since my main has posts specific to my very small town location.

My boyfriend and I met 6 months ago and had instant chemistry. We almost immediately became exclusive and it seemed like there was strong long term potential from the beginning. We have a lot in common and have a lot of fun together. I feel like I can be completely myself with him, we get along with each other's friends, do activities together, have great sex, and we're beginning to meet each other's families. We've taken weekend trips together and we're discussing taking a longer/farther trip in the fall.

From the start of our relationship, he had been working from home for a company on the opposite coast of the US. He travels there about once a month for a week. He told me in the beginning that they'd eventually want him to move out there, but implied it would be a year or more. He even asked me if I was tied down to this area for when he did have to go out there or if I'd be open to following him when the time came, provided we were still going strong. He's been staying with family for the past couple months, trying to decide if he should rent or buy around here. I knew he was stressed about this living situation without having his own place, but I never got the impression that it was more than that or that he was considering moving sooner. Granted, our sex life had been winding down a little, but I (stupidly) attributed it to his general stress and the relationship not being quite as new anymore.

Well, I picked him up from the airport a couple days ago after his most recent work trip, and he told me he's decided it's time for him to move there. He'd been thinking about it for a couple weeks and felt he'd truly decided upon this trip. He's moving both for work and also because he feels out of place here now (we both grew up in this area) and feels like this new city suits him. Up until now, I did not realize his stress ran that deep about living in this area. He'd always referred to the new city as somewhere cool that he was all right moving to in the future, but he'd also complain about having to travel out there often.

He had expressed in the past that he's not into long distance relationships, so when I asked what this move meant for us, he said he didn't know. Long distance is hard and lots of work, but I love this guy. I can see myself marrying him a couple years down the line, so of course I'm willing to try distance until I've visited his new city and we're a little further along in our relationship when I could consider moving out to join him. I told him I don't want to break up, our relationship is amazing, it feels like it's been much longer together than it has. I proposed a trial period: I have lots of vacation days through the end of the year I can use to come visit, he'll visit here for work trips, and when we hit our one year mark, in another 5 months or so, we can re-evaluate and go from there.

We think about it separately for a day or two and get together again to discuss. He says I mean so much to him and he agrees that it's only been 6 months, but seems like a much longer time. He doesn't want to end things but that he is just too scared of long distance. He acknowledges that the worst that can happen is that we just fizzle, but then he says it's easier this way, to break up now. He says he cant be a good boyfriend from so far away (not cheating, just not being attentive). We don't want to break up, but he is stuck in this view, so I go home and cry and feel generally hopeless. We were both crying, couldn't stop hugging and kissed a couple times, so it's definitely not what we would want in any other kind of situation. Usually something only 6 months in, it does make sense to cut your losses, but we jumped into being serious so quickly, it feels crazy not to fight for it.

At that point I think it's really over, but then a good friend tells me the next morning that he was driving through my neighborhood just then (I was at work). I live in the boonies, nothing around but more farms and he lives 30 minutes away near a different town. There are no stores or anything by my road that he would be driving through for. There's literally just my house. He has a very distinctive car and they locked eyes, so she's certain it was him. He hasn't reached out and he didn't leave anything for me at my house. I had nothing of his that he would have been picking up. What gives? I want to call and see what he was doing but I also want to give him space. Was he coming to see me? Was he just clearing his head? I want to know if he's ok or if there's anything else he wanted to say but I also don't want to get my hopes up for something that could really be over. He was very clear that he'd like to spend time as friends when I'm ready and I can call him any time throughout this. What should I do? Is there any way to save this?

TL;DR Boyfriend is moving cross country both for work and for himself. Our relationship is amazing and both care so much for each other. It's clear we don't want to break up, but he's refusing to try long distance because he's convinced it will be awful. But now he's driving by my house the very morning after breaking up, perhaps to see me, but hasn't reached out otherwise. What should I do? Can I save things still?
