[Acne] Normally dry skin suddenly very oily with lots of breakouts - what's wrong w/ my routine?
Hi there! I've been lurking this sub for a while, have read the sidebar, and did a quick search for my current skin concern but thought it might be a good idea to see if there's anything wrong with my specific skincare routine.
My skin has always been dry but was prone to breakouts after puberty. My skin was never THAT bad, but my acne was very persistent, so I eventually ended up on Accutane at 17. That cleared it right up and I only got the occasional breakout every few weeks!
I'm 26 now. I had jaw surgery a couple months ago and had my jaw wired shut for a few weeks, so that severely limited what I was able to eat. I drank a ton of Boost/Ensure/milk during that time, and that's when I noticed the breakouts starting again (lots of closed comedones and regular ol pimples). My skin would also get quite oily yet still feel tight.
I pared down my routine, just in case I was overexfoliating. Here's my routine (crossed out items are what I pared out from my old routine):
-
(AM & PM) Wash face w/ CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
-
(AM) Apply Paula's Choice Resist C15 Super Booster Serum (attempted to use it daily, but more like every 3 days/whenever I remembered) -
(PM) Used Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Gel 3x a week -
Moisturize skin (damp skin if I didn't use a serum) with CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion
-
(AM) Apply Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel
These changes didn't help, so I continued my pared down routine and added Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm every evening just in case I wasn't getting my makeup and sunscreen off properly. That didn't help either. Around this time, I also started a new job that was out of town. That meant weekly flights, a bit more stress, and a drier work environment.
After a couple more weeks of this, I guessed my skin had become dehydrated and thought it might be a good idea to treat this. I spot tested Vaseline for a few nights and it seemed to help on the spots I applied it on, so one day I applied it all over. The next morning I had even more breakouts! I got my period a couple days later, so I'm not sure which caused it (or if it was something else altogether).
I've been using a humidifier every night for the last while, and started using the Pixi Hydrating Milky Mist if I felt dry during the day, or at bedtime after applying moisturizer. It has glycerin and hyaluronic acid so I thought that might help with dryness, but I'm not seeing any improvement yet. And my skin continues to break out.
I feel like the issue could be one of many factors - diet/lifestyle (I may not be drinking enough water, I started drinking a lot more milk post surgery and eating less vegetables, and extra stress always makes me break out but not to this extent), one of the new products I added, or that my skin isn't actually dehydrated and I'm just making it worse. Any thoughts as to what might be the culprit?
TLDR; always had dry skin, after jaw surgery skin suddenly started breaking out a ton and feeling really oily yet tight, pared down routine to basics, added a couple products to treat dehydration, skin is still breaking out regardless. Trying to determine the culprit for these new breakouts.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading and I hope you can help!
