Bike for under $150

Hi, gf has to commute to work 2.6 miles each way and wants a bike for under $150, any suggestions? All the bikes around that price point seem heavy and shoddy but I'm looking to make the best out the situation. She has never ridden a bike before and I can continue driving her to work for another week or two. Thanks.
