Where to stop on the drive to Vernon?

My wife and I are Vancouverites (Vancouverians, Vancouverers, Vancouveneers?) driving to Vernon for a vacation. We are looking for an interesting, funky or beautiful place to have lunch halfway there, around Brookmere/Kingsvale/ Merritt. We'd rather dine in, but we are willing to rough it--I believe it's called a picnic--if you've got a breath-taking vista in mind.
